In 1931, the era of door-to-door vacuum cleaner sales, founder Godfrey Cohen purchased 30 vacuum cleaners from a newspaper auction block for $50 (equivalent to about $2,300 today) and convinced his father to give them to him. Give him some furniture by the window. Store at home. This was the birth of Godfrey, and a new way to sell vacuum cleaners to the public.

After a handshake from business partner John Johnston, the deal was sealed and Godfreys’ first store opened in Melbourne’s historic Prahran Market. Fast forward to 2024, and that initial $50 investment has turned into an empire. With more than 170 stores across Australia and New Zealand, Godfreys is the world’s largest vacuum cleaner retailer, with more than 3 million happy customers to date.
