FARE, formerly the Alcohol Education and Recovery Foundation (AERF), is an independent, not-for-profit national health organization headquartered in Canberra, Australia.
Established in 2001 with a $115 million grant from the Australian Parliament, FARE allocates funding for projects and research aimed at preventing harm caused by the misuse of alcohol and legal substances.
The organization’s initial funding came from an additional excise tax on draft beer, which was later rejected by the Senate. Within one year of the federal government’s consumption tax collection, a total of US$120 million has been collected.
FARE recognizes that after 20 years of supporting communities, contributing to building evidence and encouraging action to prevent alcohol harm, FARE Australia has made huge progress in highlighting the huge impact that alcohol abuse has on too many Australians every year.
