About Quiksilver
In 1990, Quiksilver decided to launch a women’s clothing line, which was a brave move. The surf market has been unstable. Despite their achievements in the water, female surfers don’t attract much of the bad publicity and community attention that men have long enjoyed.
But good ideas always require courage. The company sees the untapped female surfing market as a huge opportunity. It turns out they were right.
Like everything in Quiksilver, Roxy was born underwater. Originally a swimwear line, it debuted in the late summer of 1990 and became an instant success. The next year, Roxy’s activewear line launched and flourished, with sales exceeding $1 million. In 1992, the brand continued to expand with new denim lines and key snowwear products. The fact that Roxy is a women’s clothing line offered by a true surf brand also appeals to retailers and girls. It was the first on the market and other surf brands soon followed.
By 1993, Roxy was playing a major role. The popular Roxy logo was born. This is a heart logo based on the recognizable Quiksilver logo. The brand is as well known as its employees. One afternoon in Hawaii, as the legend goes, the Roxy team was sitting on the beach watching the surf when the idea for women’s board shorts came to them. Offering fit and flexibility while retaining femininity, women’s board shorts were a revolutionary product that changed the women’s surfing market forever. This is also the perfect example set by the Roxy brand originally in Quiksilver’s 1990 annual report “Fun, Bold, Sporty, Bold and Elegance”. Shorts have become a huge trend. Roxy and the accompanying female surfers are suddenly the next big thing.
1994 marked another major milestone for Roxy. Lisa Andersen, then the ASP Women’s World Champion, became the first member of Team Roxy. Lisa won three more world championships and her popularity transcended the mass market. Considered by many to be the most influential surfer in the history of female surfing, her contributions to the Roxy brand and team continue to play an important role in Roxy’s success. Under her leadership, the Skateriders team has grown into the most respected and accomplished professional team in women’s surfing. Current team members include Megan Abbo, Chelsea Georgeson, Veronica Kay, Cassia Meder, Clavalviet, surfing prodigy Carissa Moore and world champion Sofia Mulanović.
Roxy branded pro events were a natural progression from team sponsorship, and so the first annual Quiksilver/Roxy Women’s Pro Surfing Event was born. It was held in the winter of 1995 at Sunset Beach on Oahu’s North Shore. Ten years later, the Roxy Pro Hawaii remains one of the most prestigious and exciting ASP World Surfing Championships of the year.
The success of this event led to other Roxy competitions such as: Roxy Prophye, Roxy Pro Gold Coast (Australia), Roxy Jam UK, all ASP World Champions Tour events. Roxy Pro Women’s Surf Festival (Australia), one of the biggest qualifiers on the tour. and a series of amateur surfing competitions for young surfers from around the world. With such a large roster of event sponsors and a growing team, Roxy is proud to be the largest corporate sponsor of women’s surfing in the world.
As Roxy’s popularity grew, so did its product line and audience. Accessories and eyewear were added in 1995. The following year, Roxy Girl, a line of shoes, watches and girls for girls aged 7 to 16, was launched. Roxy debuted at the Girls Rules Show at New York Fashion Week in 1996, the same year the brand was nominated for a California Rising Star Award for design innovation and excellence. In 1997, in addition to Roxy’s children’s line Tiny Wahine, a snow line was added, including outerwear and accessories. In 1999, there was a large Roxy Room with a collection of jewelry, bags, backpacks, travel accessories, skate gear, bedding, lamps and posters. By the late ’90s, Roxy had become a brand for girls everywhere, enjoying mass-market appeal without losing its core audience.
The new millennium brought exciting and eclectic developments for Roxy. Launched in 2003, the full line of skis is manufactured in partnership with industry innovator Mervin Manufacturing. The Roxy Girl series “Luna Bay” is a series of seven young adult novels released in 2003. In the spring of 2005, the store launched a new baby collection. Upcoming fragrance collection. Roxy Ski, a line of skis and boots produced in partnership with Ross Signol’s Dynastar brand, is about to launch.
