The name Motoquipe began in the late 1960s with a store in Adelaide’s Regent Arcade, but Motoquipe has been involved in the business since March 1987 as a partner in the Northpark Shopping Center store.
In 1991, Motoquipe opened a second store at Parabanks Shopping Center, followed shortly by the Westfield Tea Tree Plaza, Westfield Marion and Myer Center in Adelaide.
Franchise
Motoquipe began franchising in 1995. More stores opened in South Australia: Elizabeth City Centre, Hollywood Plaza, Munno Para Shopping Centre, Westfield Arndale and Westfield Westlakes.
In the late 1990s, Motoquipe expanded to Sydney, franchising three stores: Westfield Burwood, Westfield Hornsby and Westfield Mount Druitt.
By the mid-2000s, Motoquipe had four stores in Perth: Westfield Carousel, Morley Galleria, Midland Gate and Whitford City Shopping Centre.
In 2006, Motoquipe’s Northpark store relocated to Sefton Plaza and opened a new store in the Colonnades Shopping Center. At that time Motoquipe had seventeen stores and was Australia’s largest shopping center auto parts retailer.
Since 2007, online retail has entered the mainstream of Australian households and there has been a paradigm shift in consumer behavior. The global financial crisis hit in 2008, and soon after, the concept of opening automotive retail stores in shopping malls became no longer viable.
Thankfully, Motoquipe began venturing into online retail in 2006, selling on eBay. Motoquipe’s online sales have grown steadily, allowing Motoquipe to close unprofitable stores and consolidate. Motoquipe’s website converted to an e-commerce store in 2011, and today Motoquipe is a pure-play online retailer selling on Motoquipe’s website and other platforms, including eBay, Kogan, Catch and Shop.com.

In 2012, Motoquipe moved into its current headquarters at 262 Gilbert Street, Adelaide. Within a few years, Motoquipe’s warehouse quickly outgrew Motoquipe.
